Computer programming jobs are a good choice when you live near any large metropolitan area where you’ll find data centers and large corporations. Long Island (and near by NYC) is a hot bed for computer programmers, as is Chicago, San Fran, LA, Phily, Houston, Dallas, etc, etc. Living in Valley Stream your between two massive tech markets, NYC and Tech Island (sorry – I meant Long Island.) However, one computer course does not a computer programmer make.

I know some things about computers but I cant tell u everything about them…I just want to know can a person with a small percentage of computer skills be able to excel in Computer Information Systems, for example “Computer Support Technology”?

I go to the University of Georgia and my Major is MIS (Management Information Systems) which is basically the same thing as CIS. I love my major and I would definitely recommended it to everyone who doesn’t necessarily want to go to Computer Science (because of all the science involved) but who wants to learn computer systems along with business. Most people aren’t aware of this major. But right now even as the economy is pretty slow there is a growing demand for MIS or CIS majors. Apple is in the process of building a facility in California to recruit MIS and CIS majors in the near future. There are many opportunities out there and most people don’t even realize it…

I was looking into being a computer software engineer, and am a little confused about what to major in. My school has 3 computer related majors, Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, and Information Technology. I was wondering what each tracks career opportunities would be. Thanks.

If you want to become a software engineer, then Computer Science is the degree to pursue.

CS program will emphasize the foundation skills – the art and science of programming. IS and IT courses will prepare you for computer systems administration, data base administration, network administration and security etc.

But your career choice is not limited by your choice of your major. If you start with Computer Science, you will have a strong foundation that you can easily steer your career track in the direction you want. So, I recommend you pursue Computer Science. By the time you graduate, and start working, you will have a much better understanding of these things and you will be in a position to steer your career in the direction of your interest.

Take some training get a certificatification and you are good to go. Lot of people i know when they started with the computer careers they didn’t know much either. You learn and get experience as you work in it 🙂

My question is will the Computer information systems or computer networking or the computer science build great structure for my knowledge that will help me learn easily in computer Gaming? If you’re up to the internal system of programming a computer game, go for Computer Science. You can also take ComSci for the computer graphics.

Either way around, take Creative Arts and Design if you’re up to Digital Structure or 3D Modelling.

Computer engineers have to go through a lot more hardware oriented classes and learn about circuits, digital signal processing, etc. CompE’s also have to go through thermodynamics courses and other *well-rounding* courses. Computer science majors don’t nearly have those many extra requirements — they mainly go through software programming classes, although many hardware classes are offered. Specific courses required may differ from school to school, but the general requirements are the same.
